Robert Macdougall, DIGIVATIONS Camp Demigod Martial Arts and Theatrical Combat faculty member. From Seattle, WA, Robert is an award winning Fight Director, Stunt Coordinator, Movement Teacher and Martial Arts Instructor. His fight direction has been seen in theaters, and live stunt shows, on five continents. He was worked as an actor, mime and clown, and toured nationally for several years, and has taught at movement and stage combat in professional theaters, colleges, universities, artist in schools programs, and professional actor training programs, in the United States, Europe, and Australia. He has choreographed action, from large battles, to individual duels, on stage and screen, with Rapiers and Daggers, Bullwhips and Bowie Knifes, Broadswords and Battle Axes, and diverse other Western weapons, as well as various weapons from the Asian cultures of India, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Japan; and choreographed and directed action with firearms from modern automatic weapons to blackpowder. He has worked as a stuntman, and/or stunt coordinator on several feature films, TV programs, and commercials in both the US and Asia. He co-founded Proteus Theater Company, and Shakespeare Plus Companies, and founded "Sword and the Play" stage combat workshops, both in the US, and Europe. He holds teaching certificates, or senior rankings in several martial arts, and is a member of the council of elders of the International Amerindo Martial Arts Association (Pentjak Silat).As a martial arts instructor he has taught classes to the general pubic, at universities/colleges, and taught Knife, and Close Quarter Combat to members of various local and federal law enforcement agencies in the US and Asia, and to members of special operations groups of the US military. He is a Feldenkrais Practitioner and teacher of QiGong, and Chen Style Taijiquan. He is a Fight Director and Certified Stage Combat Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors, and Fightmaster with the Society of Australian Fight Directors. His clan motto is Venceri Vel Mori.
He works as a performer and teacher for youth theater workshops, creative dramatics, mime, clowning, and sometimes stage combat (depending on the age) for grades K - 12, from very low economic strata in Barrios in Colorado, to very high end private schools in Oklahoma City, and Houston,..in Texas, Colorado, Alaska, Montana, California. He has taught movement and stage combat (to the older kids) for the Youth Theater Wing of Montana Shakespeare Festival
Taught stage movement and stage combat classes to Junior High School equivalent, in Eggenfelden, Germany. He has aught stage movement, stage combat, and an abridged version of a Yang Style Tai Chi Ch'uan form at the Youth Theater Group, (ages 11-16) Theater An Der Rott, Eggenfelden, Germany.
His early studies in various Martial Arts include:
Judo/Jujitsu (in my youth); Chinese Kenpo Karate (Black Belt); Kajukenbo Kung Fu (Black Belt); Shotokan Karate; Wing Chun Kung Fu; Jeet Kune Do; Muai Thai (Thai kickboxing); Capoeira (Brazilian self defense/martial art, sometimes called "combat dance", due to the way it's ritual sparring has developed over the centuries); Filipino Stick Fighting; Aikido; Iaido (Japanese sword, "fast draw",...succinct but not very accurate description of the art); Yang Style Tai Chi Ch'uan (Taijiquan) (designated as a “Teacher" by his teacher Wu Da Yeh), since 1973.
His current Martial Arts practice include:
Pentjak Silat, 22 year (indigenous martial art of Indonesia,...there are several hundred styles, I've studied 4 of them),...Rank-Guru Pilateh (Senior Instructor);
Toda Ha Buko Ryu Naginata Jitsu, 22 years (an old Japanese heavy battlefield weapons style; we train in Long Sword (Katana), Spear (Yari), Staff (Bo), Sickle & Chain (Gusari Kama), and Halberd (Naginata, Nagamaki), Rank- Okuden (means 'inner teaching/inner secrets..it's the highest rank);
Chen Style Tai Chi Ch'uan (Taijiquan), specifically; HunYuanXingYi Chen Style Taijiquan. His training includes, Chi Kung (QiGong), which are a series of individual training exercises to develop balance, energy, help lower blood pressure, increase circulation, oxygen absorption, and general health; several empty hand forms. There are 8 forms all together which take 5-45 minutes to perform depending on which and how many forms are used. His training in this system also includes weapons consisting of straight sword, staff, saber/broadsword; and,
BaGuaZhang (Eight Trigram Palm), and XingYiQuan (Mind Intent Boxing). These are two of the other Chinese Internal martial arts systems (there are many). They are similar to Tai Chi Ch'uan (Taijiquan).
In the Realm of Stage Combat, for over 28 years he has trained actors in all 8 of the standard combat styles of the Society of American Fight Directors, which include: Rapier and Dagger; Broadsword; Quarterstaff; Single Sword; Smallsword (18th/19th Century dueling/self defense-personal weapon); Unarmed; Knife (he was on the committee that developed the curriculum for standard stage fight knife training techniques, and required moves for competency to take a skills proficiency test); as well as Sword and Shield.
In addition he has trained and taught workshops and classes, in the following European weapons: Halbard; Spear; Pike 12', 14’; Zwiehander ("Two Hander" or called “Bidenhander" which is a German very long sword, usually 5 - 5 1/2 feet over all, used by the Swiss and German Mercenary "Free Companies", called Landesknecht in German); Katzbalger, (a close quarter short sword resembling a Roman short sword, also used by the Swiss and Germans (especially Bavarians) during the same time period as above, when the opposing armies would close quarters, and pikes and longswords could not be used); as well as Medieval Dagger and Knife.
Other weapons he has trained, taught and choreographed fights for include: Bullwhip; European; Cavalry Saber; Middle Eastern Scimitar; Middle Eastern Jambiya (those curved Arabic daggers found in the Middle East); Indian Talwar (curved sword); Talwar and Dahl (shield); Indian Katar, (a kind of punch dagger); Chinese two handed Sword; Chinese Straight Sword; Chinese Saber/Broadsword; Chinese double hooked swords (Shuong Guo); Japanese Longsword (Katana), Shortsword (Kodachi), Dagger (Tanto); Japanese, Halberd (Naginata)
Japanese Nunchaku (the two sticks with the cord between them); Chinese Spear (Jiang) ; Japanese Spear (Yari); Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, longstaff; Thai single sword (Darb), double sword (Song Darb); Thai Mai Sok (a kind of wooden club attached to the forearm); and Thai Ngao (Halberd).
He has choreographed theatrical combat for 30 + Romeo and Juliets; 20+ Macbeths; several Twelfth Nights, 10+ 3 Musketeers (including one new World Premier in Europe)
Have coached and/or directed fights for the entire Shakespeare Canon, including Measure for Measure, and Two Noble Kinsmen
He also trained, performed, and taught Mime, Clown, Gymnastics, Tumbling, Creative Dramatics. He is a Feldenkrais Practitioner. He studied and held licenses in Shiatsu (Japanese acupressure massage) and Swedish Massage.
